We have recently been made aware of an issue relating to a company charging for support in applying for an EVISA.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has made a ruling against Maki Online Services Ltd trading as ‘NINO apply’.

NINO apply tried to attract business by helping people apply for an eVisa through advertising emails saying that an expired Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) meant they would lose their status, be fined, deported and lose access to healthcare.

NINO apply’s usual business is charging a fee for helping people prepare an application for a National Insurance number which would also otherwise be free.

The ASA ruled that the advert was misleading about the consequences and for omitting the fact that an eVisa could be obtained for free through the government website.

They were told not to use the advert again and must tell people that they can get an eVisa for free.

Please be aware and make migrant workers aware, that they may want to look out for these misleading or alarming claims being peddled by other firms. You may also want to make staff aware that either a NINO or eVisa can be acquired for free through the .gov website and to contact their local Citizens Advice if they need further guidance.
