Good communication skills are essential when working in services providing support for people with learning disabilities. Care professionals require effective communication skills in order to enable person-centred approaches. This course introduces the importance of communication in learning disability services and ways to overcome barriers to meet individual needs and preferences in communication.
It is aimed at those who are working in learning disability settings, or those wanting to develop in this area.

Learning objectives:
• Recognise that each person with a learning disability may have a unique way of communicating
• Explain the importance of ensuring that people with a learning disability have any required sensory support
• Describe how behaviour is a form of communication, and the meanings that can be attached to behaviour
• Identify simple ways that can be used to check understanding and that could help someone remember important information
• Explain why and how individualised communication plans should be developed, implemented and reviewed with people with a learning disability

Delegates are expected to be engaged in learning, participate in all activities including group discussions, and share their own experiences, whilst respecting confidentiality.
