This course will enable Care professionals to take on the role of Champion within their organisation for this topic. The Champion will have a clear understanding of local and national guidance and legislation for and will cascade this information amongst care teams, improving the safety and quality of care for individuals.
This comprehensive training programme combines the roles of a Dementia Champion and Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) strategies. Participants will learn to effectively integrate both approaches, fostering a holistic and person-centred approach to dementia care. Emphasis will be placed on collaborating with appropriate partners at key junctures, ensuring timely and coordinated support. Additionally, the course will cover the utilisation of Dementia strategies and valuable tools in providing optimal care for individuals living with Dementia.

Expectations of being a Champion are as follows:
• Share knowledge to staff through team meetings, mentoring and coaching
• Gain topic specific knowledge
• Keep up to date with resources and support via the HCPA Members Zone
• Take responsibility to champion the topic area to ensure the care provider meets best practice standards
• Build strong relationships with professionals
• Support “Better outcomes for the individuals you support” for topic area
• Review Governance of the topic including reviewing and update policies and procedures to meet standards
• Attend yearly CPD and complete reflective accounts to enable revalidation

Selecting your Champion
To help you select your chosen Champion, they will need to:
1. Be a member of staff with authority to mentor staff and work with external partners
2. Have enthusiasm and dedication to promote best practice in the organisation and action change
3. Be committed to multi-disciplinary working, both internally and externally
4. Have confidence and strong communication skills to share information with staff teams via team meetings
5. Have the ability to critically review current governance processes for the topic area

• Understand how to implement Dementia-friendly environments to promote dignity, autonomy, and well-being for individuals with Dementia.
• Outline how to support people living with Dementia to meet their daily living needs.
• Describe the importance of effective communication and how to enable positive interactions for people living with Dementia.
• Recognise the impact of language on perceptions of Dementia and explain how to implement an inclusive, non-stigmatising organisational culture.
• Understand the fundamentals of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) in Dementia care.
• Explain how to implement active support strategies and risk-positive approaches to promote meaningful engagement and improve quality of life for people living with Dementia.
• Describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for Dementia, including approaches to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD).
• Explain the importance of health promotion activities and enablement in Dementia care.
• Outline the approaches for evaluating standards of Dementia care and measuring the impact of services, both locally and nationally.
• Analyse case studies to gain awareness about different situations that people living with Dementia face.
• Develop SMART goals and an action plan to instigate positive change and improve outcomes for people living with Dementia.
