CPD for Nurses – Catheter Care – Cohort 01

One day course at HCPA Campus
The Catheterisation CPD session is designed to provide registered nurses with a thorough understanding of catheterisation.
By the end of the session, participants will recognise the anatomical structures of the urinary system and understand the NMC Code of Conduct related to catheterisation. They will discuss and practically demonstrate male and female urethral catheterisation techniques and gain awareness of caring for suprapubic catheters. Utilising resources such as demonstrator models, catheterisation packs, the course involves group activities, discussions, and feedback sessions to ensure a practical understanding. The training is formative, with assessments throughout, allowing participants to engage in demonstrations, complete assessments, and reflect on their learning outcomes while receiving continuous feedback.

Learning objectives:
• Recognise parts of the anatomical structures of the urinary system
• Understand the NMC Code of Conduct with relation to catheterisation
• Identify the structures of the male and female anatomy
• Discuss all aspects of intermittent, suprapubic, male and female urethral catheterisation
• Recognise the importance of accurate documentation
• Be able to use reagent strips and identify the composition of urine
• Recognise the importance of fluid input/out monitoring
• Understanding the importance of catheter care
• Know When to stop the procedure
• Infection control issues
• Problem solving- blocked catheter
• Risk management- catheter maintenance solutions
• Practically demonstrate the technique used in male and female urethral catheterisation
