Discuss data protection and security with our dedicated NHS Mail team at HCPA
GDPR in the news
In November 2018, the international hotel group Marriott is to be fined £100m by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after a colossal global hack of 339 million guests personal data, which included credit card details, passport numbers and dates of birth. The extensive hack has affected guests in 31 countries in the European Economic Area, including the UK (Source: The Guardian).
The ICO said Marriott had failed to undertake sufficient due diligence and should have done more to make sure it’s IT systems were secure. Moreover, the theft of customer information was not discovered until last year (Source: The Guardian).
How does this affect care providers?
A big part of protecting the availability, confidentiality, integrity and privacy of your data is rooted in the cyber security safeguards that are in place to avoid, or reduce, the disruptions from any attack on data, whether on computers or mobile devices. This is vital for ensuring the quality and safety of care and support.
According to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Cyber Breaches Survey 2019, 32% of businesses and 22% of charities have identified breaches or attacks. Among these organisations, the most common types of breaches or attacks are:
- Phishing (scam) emails (80% of businesses and 81% of charities who experience breaches or attacks)
- Others impersonating their organisation online (28% and 20%)
- Viruses or other malware, including ransomware (27% and 18%).
This is why data protection and security is a high priority for businesses and why all your staff must be aware of how to implement effective protective measures.
How can you improve your data security?
Cyber security is a constantly changing area and sometimes can seem quite confusing. However, there are many effective and relatively simple steps that can be taken to protect information and protect you and your organisation.
