Universal Credit is replacing a range of means-tested benefits paid to working-age people. It is already in place for new claims across half of Hertfordshire and will be in place for the rest of the county by the end of 2018.
Many people, especially those with ill-health or disability, who are very worried about the transfer to Universal Credit may seek support from you and your staff for some basic information.
Existing claimants will be transferred to Universal Credit if they have a change of circumstances at any time from now, and, from July 2019 onwards, even without a change in their situation.
In addition to changing the amount of money that someone gets, Universal Credit is paid monthly and includes a rent payment, which the person will have to take responsibility for handing over to the landlord.
To help clarify the details we’re running a number of fully funded two hour sessions, with the first taking place next week, focusing on how to support service users affected by Universal Credit.
